Before I begin, let us not forget that PECAN COTTAGE is the only place in central and south central Oklahoma – the Arbuckle Country – that specializes in Chick Trips; old-fashioned sleep-overs for girlfriends. And it is very near many wonderful things to see and do including what follows…
Susen’s story: After spending nearly 40 years on the beaches of California, in 2002 I relocated to Kansas, a part of our country where bathtubs and rubber ducks are considered water sports. By 2006 I was desperate to get personal with a lakeside retreat and a travel writer’s assignment created the opportunity.*
Three weeks later Stan and I were soaking in a hot tub on a deck overlooking our own private lake, not far from Turner Falls and the Arbuckle Wilderness.
The first day Stan took his beloved Harley on a world class motorcycle ride with
a new friend through the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and I got a tour of everything else that makes the Arbuckle Mountains a popular attraction including a backstage tour of Arbuckle Wilderness, a 400 acre drive-thru park home to thousands of wild animals from across the world. We came nose to nose with camels, zebras, rhinoceros, and lions, tigers and kangaroos? This park is one of the finest examples of wildlife conservation that our country offers and was recently awarded the distinction of Oklahoma’s Outstanding Tourist Attraction.
It is all about the animals at Arbuckle Wilderness, but there is so much more. Picnics, paddle boats and bumper boats, a great go-cart track, camel rides and an especially entertaining petting zoo with lemurs, reptiles, and colorful tropical birds. *End of the story – six weeks after our lakeside vacation, Stan and I had bought and moved into a lovely house near Lake of the Arbuckles where we plan on growing old together with friends like the Garretts and many others who have helped make it home. That was almost 5 years ago and we love it.

A Most Wonderful Surprise
First, I would like to wish you all a Very Happy and Successful 2011. Can you believe it is right around the proverbial corner?
Second, this was a beautiful and unexpected Christmas. The man I love really shocked me this year. He apparently called a friend of mine who owns a charming boutique in Pauls Valley Oklahoma (where Planet Earth Jewelry by Susen Foster is for sale) and from whose shelves I have come home with several luxurious new purses; but, though I have drooled on one in particular this season, it just wasn’t in my budget.
Evidently, Stan asked store owner Debbie what she thought I would like for Christmas and she remembered the “drooled on” purse.
You guessed it; that gorgeous, unusual, and perfect purse was “under the tree” Christmas morning. Imagine the look on my face to see a wrapped present in the first place since he had already promised to make me some new display racks for my jewely collection; and then to find my heart’s desire in the box. WOW. What a guy! And what a pair of sneakies!! Going to have to watch those two.
It was kind of nice respite not to have guests at Pecan Cottage Bed & Breakfast over Christmas weekend. I do have 4 ladies meeting there for a Chick Trip later this month – a couple gals from Dallas and a 2 more friends from Oklahoma City. I bet they are really looking forward to checking out the neighborhood casinos, Bedre Chocolate factory, Field’s Pies, (my jewelry), visiting some wineries and maybe boutique and antique shopping, too. Or perhaps they plan on just kicking back, enjoying each other and all the goodies I provide; watching a DVD movie marathon or going to see the new Chickasaw Cultural Center after they visit Turner Falls overlook and grab a famous Arbuckle Fried Pie.
Bless you all for being there during our first year. We are actually about seven months old now and so far, so good. Hope to see YOU in 2011. All girl getaways – or Chick Trips – are the best way to travel and Pecan Cottage is a comfortable, affordable and extremely well stocked place to call home for a few days.

Well, my midweek guests (3 sisters from Michigan & eastern OK) just called to say they had a wonderful time at Pecan Cottage and touring South Central Oklahoma. They especially loved Bedre’s, Purcell’s antiques, watching lots of DVDs, and eating themselves silly. Shirley got her bag full of fresh-off-the-trees pecans – which was a priority for her – and everyone rested, laughed, and, in Carole’s own words, “thoroughly enjoyed themselves.”

Now I know why innkeepers keep going. The people are so nice. Pecan Cottage Bed & Breakfast specializes in Chick Trips – girls only getaways in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. When I first thought of this idea, people said it wouldn’t work. But you know what? It brings plenty of guests, nice guests who treat my house like they would their own or better.
So far everyone has left the cottage in very nice condition and some have even washed a load of towels and done all the dishes. Isn’t that something?
