NEVER WONDER TO DO

When you stay at Pecan Cottage you can sit around enjoying the semi-solitude or you can wander all over Central Oklahoma and find adventures in town or an hour away.

Guthrie is an hour away – but plan on staying a few hours. Here’s one reason why.

A Special Duo & Their Dream for Guthrie
By Susen Foster

As the economy began shrinking a few years ago, so did checkbook balances. Business owners renting office spaces found themselves needing to save a few dollars by moving their offices to their homes; thus leaving many empty spaces within what were once thriving business communities. As the exodus to home offices was going on, building owners also had to get creative and look for solutions.

Randy Robison and wife Carie are two of the lemonade making type of folk. They discovered that what some might consider a depressing dilemma was in fact an opportunity to do something they had wanted to do for a long time.

A joint dream of this couple had been to share with the general public, the wealth of arts and crafts created by Oklahoma residents. Their beautiful two-story historic brick building at 108 S. Division in Guthrie was one of those left awkwardly emptied. But they remembered their dream and decided the time was ripe to build a showcase for Oklahoma artists.

Though both had fulltime careers, they put all their spare time into renovating the 12,000 square feet building and contacting artists and artisans they knew and admired. The concept caught on like wildfire and soon word of mouth brought many, many works of art for them to look at. Then they began an artistic endeavor of their own; hanging and displaying the various artwork of all mediums in a manner pleasing to the eye. And in time their dream became a reality.

In 2008, Simply Oklahoma opened its doors and now several thousand works of art by over 150 artists are on display for all to see. From pottery to mosaics, oils and acrylics to watercolors, natural stone jewelry to hand-carved items filled the space upstairs and down; so much so that soon the Robisons determined the downstairs should be a taste of the fine art collections upstairs as well as home for the broad collection of handcrafted merchandise; thus began The General Store while the upstairs became known as The Gallery.

The concept of promoting only products and art from the hearts and hands of everyday people in a static environment was unique; and the Guthrie, Oklahoma location a perfect spot since the town had long developed a healthy reputation as a tourism destination.

Though some of the artists are well known and their art recognizable, the majority of artwork and crafts come from people who produced as a hobby, not a business. With the economy still on a slippery slope, the opportunity offered by Randy and Carie Robison was well met by these people. In addition, having their heartwork on display was validation and encouragement especially when a visitor found something they loved and took it home.

Whether the thousands of visitors who enter Simply Oklahoma’s portals since their opening are from far away or just down the street, they more often than not find at least one or two items they cannot live without and there begins another legacy the Robison’s hoped to see blossom.

Here’s a great contest. The first person who can name the stone used in this necklace will win a custom bracelet designed by me. Here’s a clue. They are all the same stone. If no one gets it right by 6pm Central tomorrow night I will post another clue; and so on, until someone gets it right. You can try as many times as you like. Subscribe and Comment. I will get response in my email box. Good luck.

Okie Noodling Tourney – good time to make your reservations at Pecan Cottage

In the Mud

OH MY GOSH!!

Extremely Okie
Okie Noodling Tournament July 9, 2011 Pauls Valley
by Susen Foster
The 2011 world famous Okie Noodling Tournament is Saturday July 9 in Pauls Valley, klahoma. It’s a family affair at Pauls Valley City Park, the official site of the annual competition, and admission is free; fried catfish is on the menu, and you can even get a lesson in noodling.

And if tempting fate in muddy water isn’t your thing, then how about entering your favorite catfish recipe in the Catfish Cookoff?

What is “noodling” you ask? According to Wickepedia – “noodling is the practice and sport of fishing for catfish using only one’s bare hands” – a convincing argument that this sport is not for the faint of heart.

Phil Henderson, a fan and sponsor since the beginning, tells us Noodling “…is an unusual way of fishing, no doubt. Take an intrepid sportsman and a large flathead catfish and you have an unbeatable combination for a pretty wild fishing tournament.”

Characteristics of a successful noodler include 1. the Hulk’s upper body strength; 2. Sponge Bob’s breath control; 3. Robin William’s selective insanity; and 4. a spouse who can maintain a cool façade while hoping she won’t have to raise the children alone.

You are probably already planning your first excursion into the extreme world of catfish noodling; preparing to bring in the granddaddy of all catfish without losing a single digit.

Or perhaps you prefer to experience this phenomenon more vicariously. If that’s the case, plot your GPS for a day trip to PaulsValleywhere you can cheer on those brawny fishermen and their whiskered catches as they compete for bragging rights, and some serious prize money, at the 2011 Okie Noodling Championships on Saturday July 9th.

Second Saturday Art Walk

Hey there art lovers,
Though the tourist town of Guthrie, Oklahoma is a bit of a drive from Pecan Cottage Bed & Breakfast in Pauls Valley – straight north up Interstate 35; or if you want to join us from up north it is straight south on Interstate 35 to the Historic Guthrie Exit – on April 9 it will be more than worth your time.

On April 9, pile your girlfriends (and their credit cards) into your car and take them to lunch at one of the awesome eateries in Guthrie while they peruse the gorgeous old buildings of Historic Downtown Guthrie which are filled with art galleries, antique shops, art studios, craft shops; so much it will overwhelm the senses.

The Second Saturday Art Walk is always special. Though it is advertised to start late in the day, things really begin happening around lunch time and since Natural Stone Jewelry by Susen Foster will be some of the featured artwork at Simply Oklahoma – THE coolest art gallery in my experience – you can bet that I will be there by noon to hang out with my old and new friends until I wear out.

This will definitely be the day to plan on buying my necklaces and earrings. I have never had a sale like the one I’m planning for Saturday April 9. BE THERE or you will be very disappointed in yourself and your friends will laugh at you. “HA, HA, HA & HA” they will say in unison as they flash their new accessories.

And if you want to stay with your friends at Pecan Cottage you had better make your reservations now.

As an added incentive, I am giving a complimentary piece of my handcrafted natural stone jewelry to each person in the all girl group that books Pecan Cottage for that weekend!!

So…what’s the hold up? Call your friends (4 is the maximum), email me at pecancottage@gmail.com to check availability, send me a $100 PayPal non-refundable deposit, and get ready to PARTY with your best gal pals!!

If you cannot get away for the entire weekend, please still come visit with me at Simply Oklahoma in Guthrie on the Second Saturday Art Walk and plan on taking home some lovely, lovely things.

Talk to you soon, Susen Foster – your friend and hostess
